Capability Modeler takes you from a spreadsheet of capability names to a funded, board-ready portfolio of investment programs — collecting real maturity data from the people who actually run each capability along the way.
Import
Upload your CSV. A column-mapping screen lets you match your own spreadsheet's headers to the fields Capability Modeler understands — you don't need to reformat anything first, and only a number and a label are required to get started. Click Auto Layout and the whole model arranges itself into a clean grid.
Collect the Data
Assign a steward — by name or department — to each capability, then share the model with Steward access. Each steward can update maturity and cost on the capabilities they own, with no access to restructure the model itself. What comes back is a maturity heatmap, ready to export straight into a presentation.
Plan the Portfolio
Take the capabilities your Priority score just ranked and build more than one plan. Draft several candidate portfolios side by side, moving gap areas between them as the shape of the plan comes together. Before you generate anything, the wizard checks every draft — flagging a capability gap claimed by more than one program, and any strategy-linked gap no program addresses yet — so you know which candidate actually holds up before it goes into a planning review.

This is where Capability Modeler earns its keep. Once your model has maturity scores and strategic links, it doesn't just show you a picture of your business — it tells you where to invest, and helps you build the actual plan to do it.
Score the Gap, See the Priority
Score each capability's current and desired maturity across four dimensions — People, Process, Tools, and Information — and link capabilities to the strategic initiatives they support. A priority score combines the size of the gap with how many strategies depend on that capability, so a Priorities report ranks exactly where investment matters most, instead of leaving you to eyeball a heatmap.
Build Draft Programs
The Proposed Programs wizard walks each strategy's impacted capabilities, ranked by priority, and lets you assign specific gap areas — People on this capability, Tools on that one — to whichever investment program you're building. Work on several draft programs side by side, and freely move a gap area from one to another as the shape of the plan comes together.
Catch What's Missing
Before you commit, the wizard flags anything worth a second look: a capability gap claimed by more than one program, so you don't fund the same fix twice, and any strategy-linked gap that no program addresses yet, so nothing falls through the cracks in the planning cycle.
Manage It as a Real Portfolio
Generate the portfolio and each draft becomes a real program on a Program Board, ready for its own Objectives and Key Results — as many of each as the program needs. Run a Portfolio Report, and export the whole board as CSV, native PowerPoint, PNG, or JPG to take into a planning review.
What Goes In, and What Comes Out
This is a real sample file — the same format Capability Modeler's importer accepts — and two actual PowerPoint exports it produced from a model, open and editable in PowerPoint. The model itself and the portfolio of programs you build from it both export the same way, as CSV, PowerPoint, PNG, or JPG.
Input: a capability spreadsheet
The first few rows of a real sample CSV (synthetic data — no real organization or person). A bare number with no dot becomes a group; each dot after it nests one level deeper — 1.1 sits directly under group 1, 1.1.1 under 1.1, and so on — building the same up-to-five-level hierarchy the model itself supports.

Do I need to install anything?
No. It runs entirely in your browser.
What format does my spreadsheet need to be in?
A CSV file. The import screen shows a column-mapping step so you can match your own spreadsheet's headers to Capability Modeler's fields — only a number and a label are required; everything else is optional.
How many levels deep can a capability model go?
Capability Modeler supports capability models up to five levels deep — a top-level group down through four nested levels of capability. The Model Levels control lets you choose how many of those levels the canvas and reports display at once.
Can I get my data back out?
Yes, any time — as a CSV in the same format you imported, or as a native, editable PowerPoint slide.
What's a "portfolio of programs," exactly?
It's the output of the Proposed Programs wizard: a set of investment programs you build yourself by assigning specific capability maturity gaps — ranked by priority — to whichever program addresses them. Each program can carry its own Objectives and Key Results, and the whole set lives on a Program Board you can report on and export.
